I want to read a book in which the earth has no moon,

instead a ring like Saturn's. Never mind the theories about the role of the big moon in creating our atmosphere; just imagine a world in which, when you look up at night, you see no moon, just -- what, the edge of the ring? What would it look like from below? Would it cast a shadow in daylight? Well, it's your story.

But in such a world, everything would be different. One less rhyme for June. Navigation & astronomy would have developed differently and influenced politics in different ways. Places where you could see the ring edge-on would be special. Would we have space flight?

One thing I ask. Don't mention the ring. Every book that has ever been written about life on earth assumes the moon, whether it is mentioned or not. So this new book need not mention the ring explicitly. It should just assume it's there.
